Exchange View: Stralsund, How & Where to Have Fun During Your Exchange Semester

If you’re reading this article, you must be about to embark on an incredibly life-changing exchange journey to Stralsund, a charming Hanseatic City located on the Baltic Sea coast in Northern Germany. Or maybe you are just passing by and curious about this rich in maritime history city, either way, this article will give you a short blueprint for enjoying your time in Stralsund.

First and foremost, visiting the Ozeaneum, one of Germany’s largest aquariums is a must when in Stralsund. The Ozeaneum not only catches locals’ attention but also attracts visitors from all over Germany as it showcases fascinating exhibits of the Baltic Sea and global marine life including colorful coral, glowing jellyfish, and sharks. It also provides the visitors with interactive displays where they can get immersed in the history and knowledge of the Baltic and the environment.

Listed as a UNESCO Old Town, Stralsund is paved with cobblestone streets and Gothic brick architecture. It’s a perfect example of a medieval town and has managed to preserve this ground plan to this day. The three big churches located in the city are a must-visit, with their Brick Gothic architecture and immaculate interiors. St Mary’s Church, St Nicholas’ Church (the oldest church in the city), and St James’ Church are the biggest churches that are a must-see even if you are not religious and gave upon the beauty of the architecture. All churches occasionally host concerts and events.

If you are a lover of animals, visit the animal shelter ASPCA Stralsund where you can take the dogs on a walk and spend the day with them. On the other side, if you just wish to see animals without interacting with them physically, why not visit the Stralsund Zoo which is located right out of the city center and is home to quite a few animals from around the world and don’t worry, it meets animal welfare guidelines.

If you’re tired of the dry land and wish to cool down a little, don’t miss the chance at a Cultural Kayak tour. Not only is it a fun activity with friends, but also educational as you tour a part of the Baltic learning about the history of the city. Kayaking is not the only activity you can enjoy, having a simple relaxed afternoon at the beach is also an option. Simply head to the Strelasund Bathing Beach for some sun and relaxation or beach volleyball and picnic.

For a more extravagant form of entertainment, keep your eyes on the lookout for theatre performances at the Stralsund Theatre. Good news is sometimes the university gives out free tickets to the students for several performances.  On offer are ballets, themed musical concerts, and even combination performances. For more adrenaline-filled days, visit the paintball arena, bowling alley, or laser tag fields. For some nightlife entertainment, there are several bars, shisha bars, and pubs in the city, including a club located by the harbor. A good student bar to visit is Knuts, which is in the city center and usually has themed nights and specials, such as St Patrick’s Day or karaoke night.

Not only is Stralsund a place to explore and have fun activities but is also wonderful to have a stroll and enjoy the picturesque architecture.
