The Essence of Coffee: An Ethiopian Girl’s Perspective

Vol 27 Issue 23 4th April 2025
As an Ethiopian girl, coffee is more than just a drink; it is a tradition, a culture, and a way of life. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and for centuries, it has been deeply woven into our society, shaping our daily lives and social interactions.
The story of coffee begins with Kaldi, a goat herder who discovered coffee beans after noticing his goats became energetic after eating them. From this legendary discovery, coffee spread throughout the world, but its roots remain firmly in Ethiopia.
In Ethiopia, coffee is not just brewed, it is celebrated. The traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a symbol of hospitality and connection. It begins with freshly picked green coffee beans, which are washed and roasted over an open flame. The aroma of roasting coffee fills the air, creating an experience that engages the senses before a single sip is taken. Once roasted to perfection, the beans are ground by hand using a mortar and pestle, then brewed in a clay pot called a ‘jebena.’ The coffee is poured into small cups, often without handles, and served in three rounds: Abol (the first and strongest), Tona (the second, slightly milder), and Bereka (the third, symbolic of blessing and friendship).

Beyond tradition, coffee is an economic lifeline for Ethiopia. The country is one of the world’s largest coffee producers, and its distinct varieties such as Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Harrar are prized for their unique Flavors. Ethiopian coffee is known for its rich aroma, fruity and floral notes, and smooth body, making it a favorite among coffee lovers worldwide.
For me, coffee is more than a morning pick me up; it is a reminder of home, of family gathered around the jebena, sharing stories and laughter. It is a taste of Ethiopia’s rich history and vibrant culture, carried in every cup. So, the next time you sip a cup of Ethiopian coffee, know that you are partaking in a centuries old tradition that is as warm and welcoming as the people who prepare it.
