Lappeenranta: A City Shaped by Lake Saimaa

Vol 28 Issue 03 26th September 2025

At the end of August, I went to Lappeenranta with my two children. It is a beautiful city not far from Kouvola, and it is well known for its location near Lake Saimaa. We wanted to enjoy the last days of summer, so we booked a small wooden cottage by the lake. The place was quiet and natural, but still close to the city center. From the window we could see the water, hear the birds, and feel the fresh air.

On the first evening, we met our friends. Together we went fishing and rowing a boat. The children were very excited when they caught a small fish. Later, we made a barbecue outside. The food tasted especially good, maybe because we cooked and ate it in nature. Everyone was relaxed and happy. For me, this evening was a break from everyday stress and a chance to enjoy simple moments with family and friends.

The next day, we joined a music festival in the city. The festival was full of life. People were smiling, listening to music, and even dancing together. I liked the warm and friendly atmosphere. It showed that Lappeenranta is not only about beautiful nature, but also about culture and community spirit.

What impressed me most was Lake Saimaa. It is the largest lake in Finland, and it gives Lappeenranta its special charm. The water is clean and blue, and the forests around are green and peaceful. Just sitting by the lake made me feel calm and thankful. In summer, the lake is also a perfect place for sailing. Many people learn and practice sailing there, and some even drive small sailboats across the wide water. Watching them made me think that this city offers not only natural beauty, but also possibilities for learning new skills and enjoying active outdoor life.

For me, this short trip was full of different experiences: nature, friendship, culture, and new ideas for activities. Have you ever been to Lappeenranta or Lake Saimaa? Do you think a lake can make a city more livable and attractive? My visit made me understand better why Finnish people love their lakes so much.
