When starting university, hearing people talk about “startup ecosystems” sounds super complicated. But honestly, it’s just three things working together- big ideas, investor money, and people willing to build them.

In today’s article, we break down how tech works in three major European countries, highlight cool companies to watch, and look at how students can land an internship.

So, what’s happening in the big three companies?

UK (London) is the absolute financial heavyweight in Europe. London gets the most investor money and leads globally in FinTech and consumer hardware. France (Paris) is super focused on AI and tech backed by the French government through La French Tech. They are home to Station F, the biggest startup campus on the planet. Finland (Helsinki & Kymenlaakso) is huge on gaming, B2B software, and deep tech. Helsinki hosts Maria 01, the Nordics’ biggest startup campus and world-famous events like Slush.

Key Startups to Know

London has Omnea (procurement AI), Wayve (self-driving cars) , Monzo (digital banking), and Nothing (cool smartphones and audio gear), while france has Mistral AI (AI foundation models), Pennylane (accounting software), Back Market (refurbished tech marketplace), and Dust (AI assistants). Finland has Oura (smart health rings), ICEYE (radar satellites), Supercell (Clash of Clans creators), and Wolt (food and package delivery).

How Can Students Land an Internship?

We don’t need a finished degree to get our foot in the door. Use Student-Friendly Job Sites and skip generic job boards. Look on Welcome to the Jungle, Otta, or Bright Network. Filter by “Internship“ or “Entry-Level“. Find founders or hiring managers on LinkedIn or Twitter/X, drop them a short message, and show off a project or assignment student has worked on. Get Involved on Campus. In France, apply for student-entrepreneur status through PÉPITE / SNEE. In Finland, student clubs like Aaltoes run massive student events.

What About Xamk students in Kouvola?

Students don’t have to live in a capital city like Helsinki to get real experience. The Kymenlaakso region (Kouvola and Kotka) specializes in circular economy, logistics, gaming, and digital business.

One can do RDI Projects for Credits. At Xamk, students can join live Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) project like working with BioSampo on sustainable materials and earn study credits (TKI-opinnot) while doing real work. Join Patteri ES, our student entrepreneurship society. They host workshops, hackathons, and trips to Slush. Do a Thesis for a Company. Search JobTeaser or reach out directly to local businesses (or Helsinki startups) to do a commissioned thesis (tilaustyö). It’s one of the easiest ways to turn a student project into a full-time job offer after graduation.

To summarize, getting into the tech scene as a first-year student really comes down to taking the first step. Pick the location or topic of choice, whether finance in London, AI in Paris, or sustainability and gaming in Finland. Join a student society, reach out online, and one should use their own university projects to build the CV.
