Behind The Walls Of Meduusa Studio: What Game Designers Do

Kouvola, student story

Vol 27, Issue 02, 20 September 2024

If you study at XAMK’s Kouvola Campus, you’ve probably heard of Meduusa Studio. And if you’re not a Game Design student, you might be wondering what all the fuzz is about. So, let me take you on a tour through one of the most creative spots on campus – where entire worlds come to life.

A Quick Tour Through Meduusa

When you enter Meduusa, you’re immediately greeted by a couple of oversized sandbags and a vending machine stocked with sugary drinks. What can I say? Game designers run on caffeine and snacks.

Overall, Meduusa feels more like a close-knit community than a traditional classroom setting – it’s laid-back, like a second home. The classrooms? Pretty standard, except for more sandbags and rows of PCs. Oh, and let’s not forget our trusty skeleton-friend, George, that helps us master human anatomy – vital for designing characters that actually look human.

Next, we’ve got the lobby. Picture a kitchen for teachers, comfy couches, a beamer for presentations, and occasional free snacks (score!). It’s where most of the gossip happens, trust me.

Now, onto my personal favorite: MS12, or as I call it, THE GREAT HALL. It’s massive and has everything a creative mind could wish for – motion detectors to bring characters to life, projectors for setting just the right atmosphere, and plush cinema seats for movie nights or presentations. And let’s not forget the enormous LED screen, which is strictly hands-off – seriously, don’t touch it.

But wait, there’s more – a literal dungeon. Okay, not really, but this corridor has serious dungeon vibes. According to legend, it once housed creatures like dragons and orcs. Nowadays, it’s home to sound studios, prop storage, and the teachers’ office.

At the end of this eerie hallway is a narrow staircase that leads to the next level, where students relax in the kitchen or squeeze in coffee breaks between classes.

My personal highlight? The gaming room – perfect for late-night gaming marathons or an epic D&D session with the board game club.

So yeah, Meduusa Studio is pretty magical. Feel free to grant us a visit some day!
