Finding Finland: An Exchange Student’s Surprising Discoveries
Vol,28, Issue 04, 03 October 2025
When I first arrived in Finland, I quickly realized that life here has a very different rhythm. The first surprise was the closeness to nature. No matter where you are (whether in a big city or a small town) forests and lakes are never far away. People don’t just appreciate this landscape; they live with it. Students go hiking, pick berries, or simply walk in the woods as part of their routine. Coming from a place where nature often feels distant, this immediate access feels both refreshing and grounding.
Another striking difference is the Finnish personality. At first, I thought people seemed reserved, even distant. Trains were quiet, and conversations stayed minimal. But then one evening, traveling alone on a night train, I got lost and felt a bit nervous. To my surprise, several passengers stepped in to help me without hesitation. That moment revealed the true Finnish paradox: everyone deeply respects personal space, yet when someone is in need, they are the first to offer help. It’s a form of quiet solidarity, and I find it both comforting and admirable.

And of course, I can’t forget the cultural cornerstones: sauna and ice hockey. The sauna is not just a place to relax: it’s a ritual, a tradition, and sometimes even a social gathering spot. Meanwhile, hockey dominates conversations, celebrations, and national pride. Experiencing both for the first time gave me a glimpse into how traditions can shape identity in such powerful ways.
Living here has shown me that Finland is full of contrasts: calm but caring, reserved but supportive, modern yet rooted in tradition. As an exchange student, these discoveries don’t just surprise me, they make me feel part of something unique.
