Facebook Marketplace is an excellent portal for buying and selling used goods, but sadly scammers have taken over. Listing goods for free or incredibly low prices is one of the most common frauds in Finland. The seller unexpectedly states that they are in a different city and demands on delivering the item when a customer expresses interest, only to request payment in advance for the postage.

To verify the scam I personally conducted research on this fraud operation. I tried to buy two available PlayStation 5 consoles for free. At first the sellers agreed to the giveaway before explaining they had relocated to new cities which prevented them from meeting in person. Then They refused to disclose their address and refused to send the item through post until I paid all postage fees even after I proposed to collect it personally. The situation demands immediate attention because it signals a very serious potential scam.

Use these essential guidelines to prevent becoming a victim of these scams.

1. When encountering something too inexpensive or no-cost ask yourself what factor is responsible for such an offer. Risk events begin when scammers employ various techniques to snag potential individuals.

2. Make it mandatory to see sellers in person to handle the items prior to sending any money. An unwillingness to meet in person confirms that the offer is most likely fraudulent.

3. Make sure to inspect the Facebook profile of the seller. Facebook users must watch out for new accounts that have little information and few friends because this indicates potential fraudulent activity.

4. Genuine sellers will always offer an address and a meeting point for item exchange. Any attempt to ship the item while denying personal encounters should be a reason to stay away from the transaction.

5. The criminals disappear once they receive your payment for shipping charges through any method. Protected payment methods that include buyer protection should be used when shipping goods requires special attention.

Your trust becomes the main target for scammers yet following simple protective measures prevents them from exploiting you. Trust your gut feelings above all else since your instinctual sense usually points to legitimate circumstances.
