In the Finnish Rain: Discovering the South in a Different Way.
Vol.28, Issue 08, 7th November 2025
During the holidays, my family came to visit me in Finland. I was very happy to show them my life here and the country I am learning to know every day. But the weather was not good: it rained almost all the time. At first, this was a little disappointing because we had many plans, but we quickly learned how to enjoy Finland even in the rain. This week taught me that it is very important to plan and organize a trip in Finland, especially in autumn.
Because of the rain, it was hard to find fun and cheap activities for everyone. We started by visiting bookshops in Helsinki. My family liked the books and the cozy atmosphere. We also visited some universities, and it was interesting to see how students’ study and live here. These visits were free, which was perfect because some other activities are expensive.
We also explored churches and cathedrals in the city. The buildings are beautiful inside, and they were a warm and dry place when it rained. One day, we went to Porvoo, a small town near Helsinki. I love Porvoo for its colorful old houses and the quiet streets. Even in the rain, it was very charming, and we took many pictures. `

During the week, we visited several museums, but some tickets were 20 euros per person, which is a lot for a week with a family. This showed me that it is very important to check prices before going and to have a plan B for rainy days. Warm cafés, small shops, temporary exhibitions, or even walking with umbrellas can make a grey day really nice.
I also realized that it is not easy to find fun activities in the rain at a reasonable price. Sometimes we just walked slowly and enjoyed small things, like the reflections in the wet streets or the smell of coffee in a café. These little moments made the trip special.
In the end, this week was not perfect because of the rain, but I loved spending time with my family. We laughed, talked a lot, and discovered Finland in a different way. I learned that even rainy days can be beautiful if you plan a little and stay positive. Finland has a special charm in every weather, and I am happy my family could see it with me.
