When the darkness sets in

Last week, we talked about the gloomy charm of dark November in Finland — the time when daylight fades and coffee cups multiply. This week, let’s look a little deeper into how that same darkness affects our energy and mood through something Finns call kaamosväsymys, or “winter fatigue.”

Kaamosväsymys refers to the tiredness, low mood, and lack of motivation people often experience during the darkest time of year. It usually begins in late autumn, around October, and can last until the light returns in spring.
Typical signs include constant sleepiness, craving sweets, gaining a little weight, or simply not wanting to leave the house. You might feel fine physically, but mentally you’re running on low battery.

How Finns fight the winter blues

The good news? There are plenty of ways to feel better. Many Finns start their day with bright light therapy lamps, spending about 30 minutes in front of one to simulate natural sunlight. Others make sure to exercise outdoors whenever daylight appears, even for a quick walk.

Keeping a steady sleep rhythm, eating nutritious food, and staying socially active also make a huge difference. Even a coffee date with a friend can brighten up a gloomy afternoon.

If your fatigue feels overwhelming or lasts too long, it’s smart to talk to a doctor. Seasonal tiredness is common and treatable — you don’t have to face it alone.

Spring will come

Remember, kaamosväsymys doesn’t last forever. As the days grow longer, your mood and energy naturally return. Until then, be kind to yourself — rest, move your body, and seek the little lights in everyday life.
