Volume 27 / Issue 17

Creating a game is a lot easier than you might think. Even if you have never touched a line of code before or are not a “computer nerd” … I promise you: YOU CAN MAKE GAMES!

Easy Tools for Game Development

Here are a few essential tools to get started with your first ever game (no prior knowledge needed).

ROBLOX

Believe it or not, Roblox is a great way to get started with game development! Not only is it a fun way to experiment with different kinds of ideas or prototyping, but making small games in Roblox will also teach you user experience and how to handle player feedback.

The game creation tools in Roblox are simple but offer a lot of freedom and possibilities at the same time.

FORTNITE CREATIVE

Like Roblox, Fortnite has an in-built game creator that runs on Unreal Engine. It is quite easy to learn and gives you the opportunity to publish your own games to a broad audience.

FANCADE

If you don’t have a PC, you should check out Fancade! It is a mobile game (app), where you can play and create really cute mini games in a suuuper simple way. You can even program them yourself, but not in the traditional way of coding line by line (with SO many letters and numbers…). No. In Fancade, everyone will be able to program a game. Making games in Fancade will teach you the ground rules of level design and composition.

GB Studio

Ever wanted to create your own retro-style Game Boy game? GB Studio makes it possible! With a simple drag-and-drop interface, you can create pixel-art adventure games without any coding. It’s a great way to learn the basics of game structure and storytelling while making something that looks and feels like a classic game.

Bitsy

If storytelling is your main focus, Bitsy is a fantastic tool for creating small narrative-driven games. It’s incredibly simple to use, requiring no programming knowledge, and lets you build interactive pixel-art experiences. Many indie developers use Bitsy to tell short, personal stories in a unique way.

There’s never been a better time to start making games. With so many free and accessible tools available, you don’t need to be a programmer or an artist to create something fun. Just pick a tool, experiment, and see where your creativity takes you!
