I believe that most Erasmus students share a curiosity and openness to the world that naturally leads to a common passion: travelling. When I first arrived in Finland, my travel guide was already tucked into my suitcase, and I couldn’t wait to explore the country. Today, I’m sharing with you my favourite trips in and around Finland that I highly recommend.

Let’s start with Helsinki, the must-see capital. Wander thrhough the covered markets, like Hakaniemi, taste Finnish specialties by the harbour, and make your way to the famous Senate Square, dominated by the majestic Helsinki Cathedral. The city is full of surprising churches, such as Temppeliaukio Church, carved directly into the rock, or Uspenski Cathedral, reflecting the country’s Orthodox heritage. But what I loved most were the boat trips to the surrounding islands, especially Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site ideal for a relaxing day out. While you’re in the capital, take the opportunity to hop on a ferry to Tallinn, Estonia. In just two hours, you’ll arrive in a charming medieval town, much cheaper than Finland and completely different in atmosphere.

Just an hour from Helsinki, don’t miss Porvoo, a traditional village with colourful riverside houses that look straight out of a fairy tale. Lose yourself in its cobbled streets, explore its artisan shops, and enjoy its warm and magical atmosphere.

Further west, I recommend a weekend around Turku and the Åland Islands. The landscapes there are strikingly different: dense forests, bridges linking one island to another, national parks, and peaceful lakes. With a bit of luck, you might even spot some elk!

One of the easiest yet most refreshing trips is to Stockholm. In only a 45 minutes flight, you’ll find yourself in a poetic, culturally rich, and architecturally stunning capital.

And of course, no stay in Finland would be complete without visiting Lapland. Choose less touristy seasons and rent a car with friends to reduce costs. Between the northern lights, endless snowy landscapes, and absolute silence, it’s an unforgettable experience.

If there’s one piece of advice I wish I had received before coming to Finland, it’s this: don’t focus too much on the cities. Here, it’s nature that tells the most beautiful stories.
