Stereotypes about Finland: True or false?
Vol,28, Issue 04, 3rd October 2025
When I told people I was going to do my Erasmus in Finland, I heard a lot of clichés about the country and its people. Is it true? Here is my experience.
True Stereotypes:
- Finns are careful drivers: This one really surprised me! People respect speed limits and always let pedestrians cross first, even on empty roads. It shows that they are very respectful and organized. I was really impressed.
- Finns work a lot: This is true. Shops and supermarkets are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., which shows that people work a lot. However they also know how to enjoy life. They find a good balance between work and free time. I find this very interesting.
- Finns love saunas: Almost every house or apartment has a sauna. I even have one in my student building! But I was surprised that gyms do not always have a sauna. Still, it is a very important part of life in Finland. People use it to relax and spend time with friends.
- Finns love nature: Forests, lakes, and beautiful landscapes are everywhere. Indeed, this stereotype is true. For example, people spend a lot of time outside, walking, doing sports, or just enjoying the quiet. Moreover, nature is very important in Finland and is a big part of everyday life. In addition, it helps people relax and connect with their surroundings.
- Finns drink a lot of coffee: Coffee is everywhere. You often pour it yourself from a pot in cafes or restaurants. It is not about drinking too much, it is more like a social habit. People drink coffee to meet friends and talk.
False Stereotypes:
- Finns are cold and distant: People often say that Finns are cold and quiet. But I did not feel that at all! As an Erasmus student, I noticed that students come to us to help us feel included. Yes, they are not always as loud as in France, yet their quietness does not mean they are unfriendly. When you get to know them, they are very warm and loyal.
- Finns drink a lot of alcohol: Some people say Finns drink too much alcohol. Yes, there are parties and social events, but it is not more than in France or other countries. Alcohol is part of social life, but it does not define all Finnish people. This stereotype is false.
- All Finns are blond: Not true! Many people are blond. Even so, there are also many with other hair colors. This stereotype is exaggerated.
In conclusion, stereotypes do not show the full reality. Finland is friendly, respectful, and very connected to nature. And the best way to understand it is to come and see it by yourself!
