Sustainability: Why It Actually Matters
Vol 28, Issue 04, 3rd October 2025
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word Sustainability? Let’s be honest, most of the time, it sounds like something related to science or politics. For me, it was the same too. But in reality, it means something different and much more important than we might think.
Sustainability means living on Earth without destroying it. We are not the first generation to live here, and we won’t be the last. So think about it, do we really want to leave the planet for the next generation in such a bad condition that all they have is trash?
Let me give you a clear example. When you stay in a hotel room during a trip, do you destroy it before you leave? Of course not. Earth is the same. The next generation needs clean water, air, soil, and all the natural resources we use now. This is the real meaning of Sustainability. Luckily, it has become an important focus for many people, businesses, and governments today.
- Environment: This is the first and most important pillar. It means keeping the planet healthy for your future generation. Less air pollution, fewer trees being cut down, replacing fossil fuels with clean energy, and many other actions like these.
- Society: This pillar is less well-known, but it is equally important. The purpose of sustainability is to make sure that everyone around the world has fair access to natural resources. A sustainable society is safe and equal for everyone.
- Economy: At first, this may not seem connected to sustainability, but it is. A sustainable economy means businesses can make a profit without harming the environment. In other words: using less plastic, or using eco-friendly technology.
So, what is your role in sustainability? you don’t need to do something huge to change the world. Small steps matter too.
You can:
- Turn off the lights when you don’t need them.
- Use your own mug in university or work instead of disposable cups.
- Take public transport, you don’t need to drive everywhere.
- Support recycled products.
Nowadays, almost every company is trying to have an impact on sustainability, and you can be part of this easily. Care for your planet, not just for yourself, but also for your next generation.
