Vol 27 Issue 23 4th April 2025

Are you looking for a relaxing weekend trip in Finland? Hop on a VR train and head to the charming city of Kuopio! This small but lively town in central Finland is surrounded by lakes and forests, and it’s one of my favorite places to visit when I want to slow down and enjoy the moment.

A Town Full of Color – Like a Storybook Come to Life

As soon as you step off the train, Kuopio welcomes you with its colorful city center. Picture houses in soft pink, light blue, warm orange, and deep red—lining peaceful streets like a scene from a fairytale. Under the gentle autumn sun, the whole city glows with calm energy. It’s impossible not to smile.

The Train Ride – Easy, Eco-Friendly, and Scenic

From Kouvola, the ride to Kuopio takes about three hours. VR trains are quiet, clean, and equipped with free Wi-Fi and power outlets. It’s a comfortable and environmentally friendly way to travel. Plus, the view outside the window is stunning—forests, lakes, even the occasional deer! The journey itself feels like part of the adventure.

Must-Try Local Foods – Three Flavors You Can’t Miss

Kuopio is also a small paradise for food lovers. Here are three local specialties I highly recommend:

  • Kalakukko – The famous local special
This is the traditional dish of Kuopio and the pride of the Savo region. Kalakukko is a rustic loaf of rye bread stuffed with whole fish (usually perch or vendace), pork, and bacon, then baked slowly for several hours. It’s rich, hearty, and perfect for a taste of authentic Finnish history.
  • Fish Soup at Restaurant Sampo (Kalakeitto)
Sampo is a well-known historic restaurant in Kuopio, and their creamy fish soup is absolutely worth the hype. Made with fresh white fish, potatoes, and a rich cream broth, it’s the ultimate comfort food—especially on a chilly day.

The Places You Shouldn’t Miss:

  • Puijo Tower – Climb up for a panoramic view of the city and Kallavesi Lake. The view is breathtaking!
  • Kuopio Market Hall – A cozy local market where you can find Kalakukko, cheese, handmade sweets, and more. It’s also a great spot to experience the everyday rhythm of the locals.
  • Orthodox Church Museum of Finland – A peaceful and fascinating place to explore Finland’s lesser-known Orthodox heritage.

 A Few Travel Tips:

  • Dress warmly in spring or autumn, especially if you plan to walk by the lake—the wind can be strong but the views are worth it.
  • Kuopio is small and walkable, so you won’t need a car.
  • If you have more time, book a night at a lakeside cabin and try a Finnish sauna. It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the Finnish lifestyle.

A weekend in Kuopio was just what I needed: colorful streets, delicious food, peaceful vibes. If you’re looking for a little escape from everyday life, I truly recommend taking the train and discovering Kuopio for yourself. It’s a trip full of warmth, flavor, and Finnish charm.
