Train from Kouvola 1
Discover Kotka, a seaport city on the Gulf of Finland
Vol 27, Issue 20, 14th March 2025

Living in Kouvola, as one of Finland’s rail hubs, makes it easier for us to get around by train. On this trip, we explore our neighboring city Kotka, just 50 km from Kouvola, a 30-40 minute train ride away, which is perfect for a short trip with its breathtaking coastline, rich cultural heritage and unique nature.
If you prefer to ride, you can take your bike and go straight from Kouvola to the terminal, which brings you closer to the port area and saves you a detour around the city center.

Kotka location and environment is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and consists of a number of islands, with Kotkansaari (Kotkan) at its heart. The sea breeze makes the air fresh and clean.
River access: Finland’s major river, the Kymijoki, enters the sea here, making it ideal for boating, fishing and bird-watching. There are four distinct seasons: cold winters, warm summers, windy autumns and spring for watching migrating birds. If you or your kids like to see the ocean, this is the perfect place to do it!
Kotka My favorite shares are first of all:
1. Juha Vainion katu – the street of music and food
After getting off the train, head to the Maretarium marine aquarium before experiencing the coastal scenery along Juha Vainion katu. Named after the famous Finnish musician Juha Vainio, the street has a cultural flavor with verses of his lyrics carved into marble.
Salmon Soup Restaurant: Lohikeitto (salmon soup) is a must-try, and you can buy fresh fish here, which is a favorite among tourists and me!

Harbor View: The sea breeze is wild and the sun is shining, so it’s perfect for a stroll or a ride.
2. Sapokka Water Park
Known as the most beautiful park in Kotka, the lakes, creeks, and waterfalls form a scenic landscape for all seasons, perfect for a leisurely stroll.
3. Vellamo Marine Center
A modern museum showcasing Finland’s maritime history and offering simulated ship driving experiences.
4. Langinkoski Imperial Fishing House
Once the summer resort of Czar Alexander III, Langinkoski is situated on the banks of the Kemi River, surrounded by forests and beautiful scenery.
5. Katariina Seaside Park
With trails, play areas, observation towers overlooking the Gulf of Finland, and even a Moomin House, this park is perfect for parents and children.

6. Mansikkalahti Beach
Swimming and sunbathing in the summer, and views of the frozen Baltic Sea in the winter.
