Vol 27, Issue 21, 21th March 2025
Have you noticed? Spring has arrived surprisingly early this year!
Are you already itching to get outdoors and go for a hike? Where’s the first place you’d like to explore? Today, let me take you to a hidden gem in the Kouvola region—Repovesi National Park. If you love nature, adventure, and peaceful escapes, you’re going to love this place!
About the Park
Repovesi National Park (Repoveden kansallispuisto) is one of the most stunning natural spots in Kouvola. Picture towering cliffs, lush green forests, and serene lakes—it’s a paradise for hikers, campers, and nature lovers alike. Whether you’re up for a relaxed walk or a serious outdoor challenge, there’s a trail for you!
Must-Try Hiking Trails
- Ketunlenkki (Fox Trail) – A 5 km scenic loop that’s great for families. You’ll cross the iconic Lapinsalmi suspension bridge, which makes for a perfect photo spot!
- Kaakkurinkierros (Black-throated Diver Trail) – A 26 km route for true adventurers. Along the way, there are several camping spots where you can set up for the night and enjoy nature at its best.
- Olhavanvuori Cliff – Love a good view? This spot is a must-visit! It’s one of Finland’s most famous rock climbing locations and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the park.
Outdoor Fun Beyond Hiking
- Boating & Canoeing – The park’s lakes are perfect for paddling, especially Tervajärvi Lake, which is simply stunning. And here’s something fun—you can use the Fox Ferry (Ketunlossi), a hand-pulled cable ferry, to cross the water yourself! My kids and I absolutely love this part—it’s such a cool and interactive experience!

- Camping & Fire Pits – Want to stay the night? The park has multiple camping areas and free shelters for an overnight adventure. Like many Finnish forest parks, you’ll find fire pits and barbecue shelters with firewood and axes available. Just bring your own food, check the fire safety warnings, and enjoy a classic outdoor meal!
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep your eyes open! Repovesi is home to moose, lynxes, and even majestic white-tailed eagles. Seeing these animals in the wild is an experience you won’t forget!
Getting There: Easy & Accessible
- By Car – A quick 45-minute drive from Kouvola. Just type “Repovesi National Park” into your GPS, and you’re good to go.
- By Train – From June to August, VR trains stop at Kouvola, Mäntyharju, and Hillosensalmi. If you get off at Hillosensalmi, you’ll be closest to the park entrance—just walk or bike in from there.
- By Bus – In summer, hop on Bus 5 or 15 (aka the Repovesi Bus) from Kouvola train station. Check schedules at kouvola.digitrist.fi.
Quick Tips for an Awesome Trip
- The park is open year-round, but be prepared for different weather conditions in winter.
- Bring enough food and water—there aren’t any stores inside the park.
- Most importantly, leave no trace! Keep the park clean and enjoy nature responsibly.
So, whether you’re after a peaceful nature retreat or an outdoor adventure, Repovesi National Park is a perfect getaway. Pack your gear, grab some snacks, and set off on your next hiking trip—you won’t regret it!
