What you NEED to play during Winter
Volume 27, Issue 09
As a follow-up to my last article on how to survive the Finnish winter… It’s now time to get some cozy blankets, hot cocoa, and wait for the inevitable drop in temperature, it’s the perfect time to curl up with a game or two. Whether you’re looking to escape the cold or simply immerse yourself in something new, here are a few winter-themed games (and some non-winter ones) to keep you entertained throughout the season.
At this point I feel like I am writing these articles to compensate for something…
Anyway! Here we go:
1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
There’s nothing quite like the peaceful pace of Animal Crossing to make those snowy days feel warmer. With the winter update, you can experience the island covered in snow, enjoy holiday events, and decorate your home with festive items. It’s a great game for winding down and getting into the Christmas spirit, all while designing your own perfect winter getaway.
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
If you’re craving something a bit more epic, The Witcher 3 is the ultimate wintery adventure. The icy landscapes of Skellige and the frosty forests of the Northern Kingdoms perfectly match the season’s vibe. As Geralt of Rivia, you’ll go monster hunting, exploring the wilds, and experience action-packed adventures… Just like living in Finland (but on your couch).
3. Stardew Valley
For a more low-key, feel-good option, Stardew Valley is a must-play. You inherit a farm in a quiet village, and your goal is to restore it while making friends with the locals. The game’s soothing pace and charming pixel-art design are perfect for those days when you want something relaxing to dive into, especially when you can cozy up inside your virtual home while outside your real home, hell got loose.
4. Celeste
If you’re looking for a platformer that will warm your heart as much as challenge your skills, Celeste is an excellent pick. The game follows Madeline’s climb up the titular mountain, where each level is filled with precise jumps and emotional depth. The snowy environment complements the story’s themes of perseverance and mental health, making it both a difficult and meaningful experience. Plus, the soundtrack is fantastic! But a short disclaimer: This game is seriously hard to beat (just fyi).
5. Hades
For those who want something action-packed, Hades delivers non-stop action in the underworld. As Zagreus, the son of Hades, you’ll fight through the ever-changing dungeon levels in an effort to escape your father’s realm. The game features tight combat mechanics and an engaging narrative, with the added bonus of character interactions that evolve as you die and try again. It’s the perfect blend of difficulty and fun to keep you hooked during the darker days without sunlight…
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
While not necessarily winter-themed, Breath of the Wild can be a perfect wintertime game. The exploration, puzzles, and expansive world feel especially satisfying when you’re huddled indoors. PLUS: It’s Zelda. What more do you need?
7. Slay the Spire
For something a bit different, Slay the Spire is a card-based roguelike game that’s perfect for playing in short bursts during your winter break. With every play through offering new combinations of cards, the game is endlessly replayable. Its strategic depth will keep you entertained for hours. And since it is also on mobile, it’s a good pick for your bus-ride to campus 🙂
