A Weekend in Berlin: Between History and Style
Vol 28, Issue 20, March 27th
During my Erasmus in Finland, I thought: why not take the opportunity to explore other European countries?
So I decided to spend a weekend in Berlin.
I went there to visit a friend, and from the moment I arrived, I realized how huge the city is. The airport alone felt massive. For the first time, I had to take a shuttle bus from the airport, something I had never experienced before, and it already felt like the beginning of an adventure.
When I met my friend, we took a train to her accommodation. What surprised me the most? It took one hour, even though she lives close to the city center. That’s when I truly understood how big Berlin is.
A City of History and Atmosphere
Berlin is a very stylish city, but also a place full of history.

On the first day, we visited some of the most iconic landmarks. We saw the famous Brandenburg Gate, often compared to an Arc de Triomphe, as well as the impressive Victory Column.

We also went to the Berlin TV Tower, which dominates the skyline, and visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. This last place was very emotional and powerful. Walking through it makes you reflect deeply on history.

I also visited a museum, where the concept was very interesting: the artworks didn’t have a fixed meaning. Instead, each visitor could interpret the paintings in their own way. It made the experience more personal and creative.

A Paradise for Fashion Lovers
The second day was completely different, more focused on something I love: fashion.
My friend showed me several vintage shops, and honestly, I loved it. The style, the atmosphere, the originality, everything was inspiring. I bought a jumper and a pair of jeans, but that was just the beginning.

After visiting around six shops, we went to an outdoor market. The vibe there was amazing. People were searching for unique pieces, talking with sellers, negotiating prices , it felt alive and authentic.

I ended up buying a leather jacket and some silver jewelry. For someone who loves fashion like me, it was the perfect day.
Back to Finland
After this intense weekend, I returned to Finland completely exhausted, but very happy.
On the plane, I watched the sunset over the snowy landscapes. It was a calm and beautiful moment, the perfect way to end the trip.

A Different Energy
What made this trip even more interesting was the contrast with Finland.
In Berlin, people feel more open, more spontaneous, and sometimes even a little bit crazy, in a good way. They talk more easily with strangers, and the city feels very alive and dynamic. In Finland, the atmosphere is calmer, more reserved, but also very peaceful and safe. Experiencing both makes the journey even richer.
The style is also completely different. In Finland, fashion is more practical because of the cold. In Berlin, it’s more original, vintage, and expressive. You can really feel creativity everywhere, especially in the streets and markets.
And of course, I can’t forget one last highlight: we ate in an Indian restaurant, and it was amazing. I had a chicken curry, and with my friend we shared a cheese naan. It was simple, but incredibly good, the perfect way to end the weekend.
A Weekend to Remember
This weekend in Berlin was more than just a visit.
It was a mix of history, culture, and personal passion. From emotional monuments to vibrant vintage markets, and the contrast with Finland, this experience gave me a new perspective.
And once again, it reminded me that during an Erasmus, every trip is not only about discovering a new place, but also about discovering new ways of living.
