On 28 August 2026, at the beginning of the autumn semester, new Xamk students took part in an educational trip to Verla. The visit offered a chance to discover Finnish industrial history, enjoy beautiful natural surroundings and get to know fellow students through shared activities.

Located beside a lake and surrounded by green forests, Verla Groundwood and Board Mill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised in 1996. The historic factory reflects the importance of Finland’s forest industry, which played a significant role in the country’s economic development. Production at Verla continued until 1964, and today its preserved buildings and machinery help visitors understand how the industry once operated.

During the visit, a guide explained the different stages of the production process and how wood was transformed into board products. Learning about the machinery and the work carried out inside the factory made the history more interesting and easier to imagine. It also offered a glimpse into the working life of the people who were part of the local industrial community.

Verla was equally impressive for its natural beauty. The green surroundings, peaceful lake and traditional buildings created a charming atmosphere, making the area a lovely place to explore and take photographs. Visitors could also enjoy a break at the café or browse the souvenir shop for small gifts.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the trip was a brochure filled with fun nature challenges. Students were divided into groups and asked to find different animal species and natural features around the site, taking photographs of their discoveries. The activity turned a simple walk into a small adventure, encouraging everyone to observe carefully, exchange ideas and work together to complete the tasks.

For students who had just started their studies at Xamk, the activity was also an opportunity to connect with classmates outside the classroom. Working together in an informal setting made the experience more interactive and enjoyable.

The trip showed that learning can take many forms. Exploring a historical site, listening to a guide and discovering nature through teamwork made the day both educational and memorable.

With its combination of Finnish heritage, beautiful scenery and shared activities, the visit to Verla offered a refreshing start to the autumn semester. Sometimes, stepping outside the classroom is one of the best ways to learn something new and build connections with others.
