Finnish outdoors: Enjoy it while it lasts!
Nested in the northern reaches of Europe, Finland is a country that is known for its natural beauty, a rich culture deeply rooted in tradition and as a Nordic jewel waiting to be explored. “Land of a Thousand Lakes” we call it, but in fact, the country is rich with breathtaking forests and beaches as well as its pristine lakes. Wilderness in Finland is home to captivating landscapes and diverse ecosystems making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Stepping into Finnish soil as an international student can be a life-changing, thrilling, and transformative experience for many of us. Especially for an Asian student like me who chose to pursue their higher education dream in Finland, one of the most significant changes we face is the country’s distinctive climate. The practice of being indoors due to scorching hot weather in our home countries can indeed turn into a habit that can affect both physical and mental well-being. In Finland, being outdoors holds great importance for overall well-being as it’s deeply intertwined with Finnish culture and lifestyle.
While the pursuit of knowledge is paramount, the importance of taking time to connect with nature cannot be overstated. As students our lives can be demanding, filled with academic pressures, cultural adjustments, and homesickness. As we experience shorter and less daylight hours with the presence of chilly and gloomy days, exposure to natural light is essential for mood and rhythm regulation as well and sunlight being a natural source of Vitamin D makes it crucial and essential for better bone health, immunity, and overall wellness.
Engaging in outdoor activities and indulging yourself in the captivating contrasts that Finland offers from pristine landscapes to a rich tapestry of experiences can be and will be a life-changing experience for international students. Beyond the academic sphere, nature in Finland offers a path to well-being, cultural understanding and personal growth that enriches the entire experience. So let us step outside, breathe in fresh air, and embrace the beauty that nature provides as it is more than just a fleeting moment; it’s a lifelong journey.
