When I moved to Finland in August 2026 to start my Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics at XAMK, with very much excitement about starting a new chapter in my life. I knew Finland would be different from my home country Sri Lanka, but I did not realise how much I would learn from the small things in everyday life.

One of the first things I noticed was the beauty of Finnish autumn. The trees change colour, the air feels fresh, and the streets become covered with yellow and orange leaves. Even a simple walk can become a relaxing experience. Sometimes, the quiet surroundings make me stop for a moment and enjoy what is around me, on my way to XAMK.

However, the weather can be surprising as well. One day may feel quite comfortable, while the next day is cold and rainy. I am learning that dressing in layers is important. A warm jacket, comfortable shoes, and an umbrella can make a big difference.

As a first-year student at XAMK, my days are filled with classes, assignments, and learning new things. Walking to campus has also become part of my daily routine. Some days are busy, and others give me more time to explore Kouvola or relax after studying.

I have also started noticing the peaceful atmosphere in Finland. People often give each other space, and public places can feel calm even when others are around. The forests and green spaces are another lovely part of life here.

As autumn continues, winter is getting closer. I know I will need warmer clothes, good winter shoes, and a little more preparation before going outside. My advice to other international students is simple: prepare early, ask questions when you need help, and do not be afraid to try new things.

Moving to Finland is not only about studying for a degree. It is also about learning to live differently, meeting people, and growing as a person.

I am still at the beginning of my journey, but I am learning to appreciate each season and each new experience. Sometimes, the best part of student life is not a big achievement. It is simply becoming more comfortable in a place that once felt completely new.
